The 9 CONCERTO projects, in total comprising 27 communities, are working together all across Europe and are joining their efforts to work towards a sustainable future for their citizens. The experts from CONCERTO Plus (part of the CONCERTO initiative supporting the CONCERTO projects in terms of monitoring, dissemination and impact assessment) have visited the projects. Here we provide you with an insight look at the activities ongoing in the different CONCERTO communities. |

Lister Bad – Largest open-air swimming pool with solar systems in Hannover opened
With a water area of 3,200 m², the Lister Bad is the largest open-air swimming pool in Hannover. To heat the water for the three pools, a solar system has been installed on the flat roofs of the changing rooms. It consists of 1,800 m² of polypropylene solar absorbers. This measure is very cost effective for the city of Hannover. The system is very robust and is adapted for low temperature heating required for a swimming pool. The swimming pool was officially opened on 11th May 2007. |

Thermal refurbishment of apartment buildings from the 1960’s
(Linsingenstrasse, Hirtenweg, Ernst-Eiselen-Strasse, Auf dem Hollen)

Five apartment buildings have already been refurbished in the district Vahrenwald. The retrofitting operations took place under occupied conditions. Two of them belong to the housing association Spar- und Bauverein eG. The focus of the refurbishment activities have been the replacement of single apartment gas heating systems through district heating and the thermal improvement of the buildings’ envelope. Walls and ceilings have been insulated and the glazing of the windows has been replaced by low emissive glazing. More information in German can be found directly on the website of Spar- und Bauverein eG
http://www.spar-undbauverein.de/index.php?id=210,0,0,1,0,0.
Three other apartment buildings are owned and leased by the developer called Gundlach. The thermal improvement measurements for the 80 apartments are quite similar to what has been implemented by Spar- und Bauverein eG in the other apartment buildings. In the buildings owned by Gundlach however, not only the glazing, but the whole windows have been replaced and the cold bridges at the balconies have been accurately treated because the analysis of the building physics demonstrated that it was necessary. The quality of realisation has also been continually checked during the construction period. Moreover, the interior of the apartments was also modernised. After modernisation measures, every tenant was offered an electricity savings check. More information in German can be found directly on the website of Gundlach http://www.gundlach-bau.de/web/concerto.html.
Due to the high costs to do so, unfortunately none of the apartments have ventilation systems. The buildings will therefore continually be checked in particular to assess the actual indoor air quality and reduce the risk of moulds.
All ecobuildings in Hannover-Vahrenwald have been connected to the existing district heating system. At the energy balance level, this heat is produced from renewable energy sources because the local utility, Stadtwerke Hannover AG, starts to generate the necessary thermal energy (1,100 MWh per year) from the nearby Stöcken heat and power station fuelled by wood pellets instead of coal.
